Experience Mongolia and its mighty taimen
Experience Mongolia & its mighty taimen
Shishged and Tengis watershed national park remains as one of the last trophy taimen refuges. Protected solely by true remoteness of northern Mongolia’s Khuvsgul Province, local taimen population can thrive in pristine nature conditions like aeons ago. Shishged and Tengis are mighty Yenisei river headwaters – the world’s fifth longest river system and the largest river system draining into the Arctic Ocean. While they have many side streams, the Tengis and Shishged are quite unique and home to some of the world’s largest taimen. Our fishing grounds are accessible only by raft boats, horses or reindeer.
Camp Khanagai
Our camp is located in Khanagai area close to the river bank. Many guests find that “The gers(yurt) are a cosy and comfortable accommodation.” A ger is a traditional Mongolian felt-covered roundhouse style structure with a wooden frame; the main feature of ger is that they are collapsible and portable homes, suitable for nomadic living. The exterior and interior walls and roof of our modern gers are covered with white canvas making them more comfortable and airy living spaces. A centre-top window and bottom natural air conditioner design of this round shaped, circle dwelling allow the gers to always have air circulation and good energy. Our camp consists 4 gers with large window for the anglers which features 2-3 single beds with clean linens, chairs, hangers and a charming wood burning stove.

Species of Shishged
The Shishged River in Mongolia is home to a rich diversity of fish species, including the iconic taimen, known as the “river wolf” for its size and predatory nature. This ancient fish, one of the largest salmonids in the world, can reach impressive lengths and is a prized catch for anglers. Alongside taimen, the river is also inhabited by lenok trout, which come in two varieties: the sharp-nosed and blunt-nosed lenok, both known for their strong fighting spirit. Grayling, another common species in the Shishged, are noted for their delicate beauty and are often found in the river’s swift, cold waters. These species, along with others, make the Shishged River a vital ecosystem and a paradise for sport fishing enthusiasts.
Tackle & Equipment
When you already fish for Hucho Hut in central Europe – you can bring most of the tackle you already have. However for Taimen we strongly recommend #12 single handed rod or a double hander rod in the range from #8 to #10. There are several options you can choose from and we will assist you in the right choice. Single handed rods are best suited for fishing surface patterns while DH are good choice for streamer fishing. For all the information you need regarding your gear – we will send you a packing list before. We also provide you with the info of every item you might need (clothing, fishing tackle and other equipment ). Fishing for Lenok trout can be done with a trout streamer rod or any nymphing setup you like. Grayling are more or less everywhere and can be fished with all standard nymphing or a dry flysetups. Bring tackle for Lenok trout & Grayling. You will love it!.
